In The Horizon: 5 Freight Forwarding Trends of 2024

The landscape of freight forwarding continues its dynamic evolution, influenced by global economic shifts, technological strides, and evolving consumer demands. In this analysis, we delve into five trends set to define the future of freight forwarding in and beyond 2024.

1. Increased Capacity, Amidst Demand Fluctuations

The transport and logistics sector faces a unique scenario—a blend of diminishing freight demands against a backdrop of burgeoning capacity. Projections by BIMCO indicate a modest 3% to 4% upturn in global container volumes for 2024. Correspondingly, the global ocean fleet anticipates a remarkable surge of 7.8% to reach a record 2.7 million TEU. Despite a sluggish demand for air freight forwarding, capacity soared by 9% in 2023.

For freight forwarders, this translates to intense competition. Preserving customer loyalty becomes pivotal, necessitating elevated service excellence and value-added propositions. Operational efficiency emerges as a linchpin for maximizing profitability, while rate dynamics continue to be influenced by carriers vying for a reduced cargo pool.

2. Climate Change and Geopolitical Reforms

Shifting away from the unpredictability of random events, 2024 foregrounds the impacts of climate change and geopolitical tensions. These disruptive forces can alter resource supplies, disrupt transportation routes, interrupt production, and escalate costs.

Instances of escalating natural disasters, from droughts to wildfires, paint a grim picture of heightened occurrences. Notably, 2023 witnessed low water levels impacting vital trade routes like the Panama Canal, Yangtze River, and the Rhine in Europe. Concurrently, global political unrest possesses the potential to disrupt supply chain functions and investments. Mitigating these risks necessitates forwarders to prioritize agility, flexibility, and enhanced visibility in their operations.

3. Consolidation Waves

The freight forwarding sector has witnessed a surge in mergers and acquisitions since the pandemic’s onset, a trend expected to persist in 2024. Termed ‘a year of consolidation,’ smaller independent forwarders are likely to witness intensified levels of mergers.

While niche-less enterprises face hurdles in catching up with their larger counterparts due to insufficient investment capabilities, larger forwarders seize opportunities to acquire competitors and expand their market share.

4. Sustainability Trials

2024 marks a pivotal year for sustainability efforts in the transport and logistics domain.

The commitment to bolster the sustainability of supply chains is palpable, with nearly half of CEOs affirming its integration into their sustainability strategy. Yet, the challenge remains in customer acceptance of elevated costs for sustainable logistics, questioning if freight forwarders will prioritize partnerships with committed carriers and agents.

5. Digitalization Imperative

The prominence of digital freight forwarders saw a different trajectory in 2023, with most grappling to sustain growth and profitability. However, this underlines the significance of digitalization for all freight forwarders. Inspired by digital counterparts or steered by customer demands, traditional forwarders are channeling investments into advanced technology solutions.

Enhanced ‘track-and-trace’ capabilities and a focus on user-friendly platforms are key tactics embraced by forwarders to engage both existing and prospective customers. Digital tools serve as the backbone for crisis anticipation, informed decision-making, and fostering sustainability efforts. Despite the associated costs, the industry resonates with the imperative nature of digital capabilities. In fact, 76% of logistics companies acknowledge the serious risk posed by neglecting digital advancements.

2024 ushers in a year of formidable trials for freight forwarders. Negotiating economic uncertainties, geopolitical unrest, and technological disruptions while capitalizing on technological innovations and sustainable avenues will steer them toward resilience and success.
